Prince William County Girls Softball Little League is at a crossroads and we need additional help from parents for the 2022 seasons to continue to make this League a success.

PWCGSLL is an all-volunteer league. It runs because local parents and other family members volunteer their time to make sure girls in the area have a fun, safe and engaging environment to learn and play softball. Over the last 3 years, and aggravated by the pandemic, the League volunteers have dwindled to just a handful of individuals that are spread very thin.  This small group of volunteers have to manage all League activities, address any concerns and even umpire the games. Some of these same volunteers also coach a team.

Due to a lack of volunteers the League will need to make some tough decisions for the upcoming seasons. These changes include contracting a service to umpire games (which would increase registration costs), shutting down the snack shack, making scheduling less dynamic and friendly for coaches and other options that will make the League easier to manage with less volunteers, but more expensive to join and likely less engaging for the community.  Our board does not want to make these changes and have worked hard to create a family/coach friendly league run by our very own community. However, this League cannot operate without many more volunteers stepping forward.

Many volunteers on the Board of Directors no longer have daughters in the League, but continue to volunteer their time as they have seen the impact it has made in the community.  For example, almost every JV and Varsity softballer from Battlefield, Patriot, Gainesville, Osbourn Park and Unity Reed were introduced to the game by our PWCGSLL!  We have watched players grow to the elite level with travel teams, high school teams and even into college, all because they found the love of the game through our League. We want to make sure that tradition continues and also look to expand and take the League to the next level. Our ever-growing community youth need this League, but it will only work with the volunteer support of the community.

We will be having a virtual meeting on October 27th to explain the volunteer opportunities, answer questions and discuss more about the future of our League. We ask that you attend to listen and consider volunteering your time. This virtual meeting will be followed by the annual Board of Directors meeting on November 10th where volunteers will be selected for the 2022 season. More information about our upcoming open positions is listed below.  Unfortunately, a few of our current volunteers must move on from our League which will create even a great need next year.

If you have enjoyed your time in the League or have seen areas where you think your skills and ideas could improve the League, we ask that you consider volunteering your time.  Several open positions are available without a large time commitment and the more volunteers we have, the less work for all involved. There are many areas in our modern lives which tend to divide and pull our community apart. Let’s ensure PWCGSLL remains a safe and fun learning environment to bring us all together for the benefit of the youth of our community!

All Board of Director spots require attending a monthly Board Meeting (usually occurs the first Wed of each month from 7PM – 9PM) and attending all-hands events which are generally limited to Skills Assessment, Opening Day in the Spring and a fundraiser event. Individual roles have additional time commitments of varying degrees. All roles can be learned by newcomers and will be welcome to the group. Many of the roles require less than 1 hour a week time commitment outside of a few all-hands events.
